Agreement Heads Off
HSUS Ballot Issue
June 30, 2010
An agreement brokered by Governor Strickland provides for significant enhancements to animal well-being in Ohio and heads off a ballot proposal by the Humane Society of the United States.
The agreement preserves the integrity of the new Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board created by voters in November 2009. It was supported by the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation and poultry, beef, pork, dairy, corn and soybean associations. It also provides support for the enactment of laws concerning dog breeding kennels, cockfighting, and trade in wild and dangerous animals.
As a result of the June 30 agreement, the Humane Society of the United States did not file petitions for its proposed constitutional amendment on animal care and housing. More importantly, Ohio now sets the gold standard for responsible animal care and well-being laws and policies that are supported by both leading animal welfare groups and the Ohio agricultural community.

Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board
Ohio family farmers stand united in support of the highest livestock care standards. That’s one reason why Ohio has a new Livestock Care Standards Board that you, the Ohio voters, approved last fall. Ohio’s farmers look to this Board of Ohio experts — veterinarians, family farmers, food safety experts, local humane society representatives, and Ohio State University researchers — to ensure the highest level of livestock care to protect family farming for future generations, and to ensure a safe, adequate, reasonably priced, and locally-grown food supply.
Thanks to our volunteers
Thanks to all of you who signed on to volunteer for the campaign to support the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board. With the new agreement, we won’t have a campaign, but it’s important for you to stay involved, and to support the work of the new Board.
